Agricultural tunnels digging project in Al-Dhala Village

During the work in the field of agriculture, we noticed that farmers don´t use any winter farming techniques, such as plastic tunnels by drip irrigation, and this due to the lack of necessary expertise and the high prices of the necessary equipment in iron and plastic.

Therefore, the agricultural tunnels project had been prepared and implemented, with the aim of providing technical and financial support to farmers to improve agricultural production, furthermore, to encourage the method of agricultural tunnels with drip irrigation, which is not widely spread in the region. The project aimed also to improve and develop livelihoods in the region, moreover, to secure new job opportunities that enhance the capabilities of the local market.

The project had been located in the village of Dhala for many reasons, such as that there is a large percentage of women who support their families, which is considered high in comparison with the number of residents of the village

Firstly we made a study of the project needs, as well as of the availability of materials in the market. The type of seeds to be planted had been also chosen. It was decided that zucchini seeds are appropriate for this time of the year on the one hand, and on the other hand they are considered to have more financial returns than the rest of the vegetables

The project resulted in higher awareness among farmers regarding the cultivation of vegetables using the Agricultural Tunnels method, and resulted in the expansion of the planting of seasonal vegetables in northeastern Syria. Moreover, the aim was also to develop and enhance the income of beneficiaries through the resumption of agricultural activities.

A total of 392 agricultural tunnels have been completed in the project, furthermore, the number of women benefiting is 56 women who support their families due to the death, disappearance, or incapacity of their husbands. The share of each of the ladies was 7 tunnels, each one is 90 cm wide, 15 m long, 80 cm deep

achievements of the project:

– Drip irrigation, which is one of the modern methods of irrigation, through which water is distributed to plants well and a quantity of water is provided. This method of irrigation is not used in the area, but the idea has been well received by the people.

– Engineering method of cultivating the land, the community does not have any information about this method or about it, such as the method of directing tunnels in proportion to the sun, which is the source of energy for plants.
